So, You're a Writer...

Business and the Book Industry

Will you help me name a superhero?

I’ve been on another learning kick lately. Aside from completing my inbound certification this month, I’ve also been auditing a class through the Smithsonian called “The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact on Society”. The title alone sounds cool, right? Wait until I tell you who’s teaching it...

Stan Lee and Dr. Michael Uslan (producer of most modern Batman movies)!

Mind = Blown.

Initially, I signed up to appease my geekier side, but it’s become so much more than that. The class has not only armed me with information I will no doubt use as forced trivia in conversation, it’s also inspired me to outline a superhero story I’ve had in the back of my mind for years.

(Of course, right? It had to happen right after I started my writing break to job hunt full-time! LOL)

Anyway, our final projects involve creating an original superhero and doing a scene where he or she faces off against an original super villain. I created a sketch of my MC (below), but I can’t seem to come up with the right superhero name for her. Does anyone have a suggestion? :)

Three quick facts about our super-heroine:

  • Her inspiration comes from the Greek goddess Achelois, whose name means "she who drives away pain".
  • She has the ability to absorb another individual’s physical or emotional pain through touch. That pain is stored—though, it dulls with time—until released. Said release can be used offensively on anyone at any time, so long as she’s still carrying it.
  • The nature of her ability can leave her writhing and vulnerable. Also, it’s difficult for her to discern which cases to take on and which to leave as nature intended. It’s an internal struggle of sympathy versus self-preservation.
I would tell you the gist of the universe this is set in, but I don’t want to ruin all of the surprises... ;)

Question of the Week

Do you have any suggestions? :)
